After having Michael Moore and Princeton Professor, Cornel West , shoot adrenaline into their ranks, the Occupy Wall Street protest played host to celebrity icons, Kanye West and Russell Simmons. The Kanye West Russell Simmons Occupy Wall Street showing comes just after Mayor Michael Bloomberg reverses his tone on the potential timeline for protests at Zuccotti Park.
Today, music moguls, Russell Simmons and Kanye West decided to make an appearance at the Zuccotti Park. While Moore and Cornel had substantive words to feed to the momentum hungry crowd, Russell Simmons and Kanye West seemed to be a mere photo-op as they said nothing to the crowd.
After Commissioner Raymond Kelly and the NYPD announced last week that the city of New York has already shelled out $2 million extra in police overtime fees, Mayor Bloomberg announced today the Occupy Wall Street can stay as long as they would like. This is a reversal from the public stance Mayor Bloomberg took last week which called into question the length of time of the Zuccotti Park Protests.
On one hand, the Occupy Wall Street movement flexes a muscle big enough to back down Mayor Bloomberg. However, with relatively low organization and no substantive policy goals, one must still wonder if the Kanye West Occupy Wall Street Show today will define this movement as just that … a show.
