Monday night, New York City Police apprehended Terique Collins, age 24, in West Harlem for his involvement in the Sunday afternoon Harlem murder of high school basketball star, Tayshana “Chicken” Murphy(age 18) in the Grant Houses on W. 125th. Police believe Collins to have provided the gun for this tragic Harlem murder.
The two men believed to be directly responsible for the Harlem murder of Ms. Murphy, in which Collins’ gun was the murder weapon, are still on the run. Tyshawn Brockington and Robert Cartagena (both age 21) of the West Harlem Manhattanville projects are spotted on camera on the day of the murder wearing hoodies and a gun tucked into their waste.
Witnesses report that Brockington and Cartagena intended their bullets for Murphy’s younger brother, who had gotten into a dispute with the two shooters. Wearing her younger brothers hoody and having an athletic build, it is reported that Tayshana screamed: “Stop. I’m not with that.” The two proceeded to pull their weapons and open fire on the young lady. She was shot three times, dying instantly.
Touted as one of the best guards in New York City and a top national college recruit, Murphy’s life was cut short by a gun owned by Terique Collins, who has 13 prior arrests. He is being held o $250,000 bond. This Harlem murder comes just after a violent Labor Day weekend which had 48 shootings.
