Tomorrow, the installation of an 18 segment spire will begin atop of the iconic One World Trade Center building. This spire, with segments weighing over 50 tons each will be mounted atop the 104 story skyscraper, making 1 WTC both the tallest building in New York City and the Western Hemisphere at 1776 feet (what a Patriotic number!).
Installation of the WTC spire comes on the heals of its glorious “arrival from sea” to Pier 25 in Battery Park City. This arrival concluded a month long boat ride on a barge from Quebec, where the spire was constructed, only making a pit stop in New Jersey.
Sometime after midnight today, the 9 sections of this 18 segment spire will be transported from the barge with flat bed trucks and taken to the WTC construction site from Batter Park City. The actual installation will begin Wednesday morning.
Completion of the spires installation is targeted for the Spring of 2013.
